Backup Generation

Everyone has their own reason for wanting backup power. Some want their whole home protected from a blackout, others would just like to backup a couple of circuits during those annoying rolling brown outs. Whatever the case may be, Live Electric supports all options.

2 Types of Generators

Portable generators are typically smaller in size and capacity. A large portable generator would be considered 5,000 watts (5KW). They typically start with a pull cord and take either gasoline or diesel fuel.

Standby generators are the second type. These generators are usually fueled by natural gas or liquid propane and size starts at 8,000 watts (8KW) with models easily large enough to cover a 200 amp service.

Protection Options

Whether necessity or convenience, you can pick what circuits stay on in a blackout.

Some examples:

  • Furnace
  • Water heater
  • Fridges / Freezers
  • Microwave
  • Stove
  • Well pump
  • Submersible pump
  • Septic pump
  • Lighting
  • Garage door opener
  • Receptacles
  • Alarm system
  • Smoke detectors

 Control Options

Automatic Transfer Switching requires next to no attention for the user. When the power goes, the transfer switch senses the outage and sends a signal to the generator to start. Whether your home or not, your home is protected.

Manual Transfer Switching is a simpler and less expensive install. It involves physically flipping the transfer switch when standby power is required.
